In 1920, a doctor named Béla Schick had a strange idea. He thought women on their periods released toxins that killed flowers. This was a myth and completely wrong. However, his bad experiment led to real science later. Today, we know that period pain is very common. It is called dysmenorrhea. About 50% to 90% of people feel pain during their cycle. For some, the pain is mild. For others, it is very bad and stops them from working. There are two types of period pain. The first type is called secondary dysmenorrhea. This happens because of health problems like endometriosis. The second type is primary dysmenorrhea. This is the most common type. It happens because of small chemicals called prostaglandins. These chemicals help the uterus muscles move. If a person has too many prostaglandins, the muscles squeeze too hard. This causes pain. Medicine like ibuprofen helps because it lowers these chemicals. However, medicine does not work for everyone. Scientists are still learning about other causes to help people feel better.
