Dogs are often called "man's best friend," but some dogs are also heroes. They work hard to save lives in many different places. In the snowy mountains of Colorado, a dog named Tally helps find lost skiers. Tally is an avalanche dog. Her nose is very strong. She can smell people buried deep under the snow. One dog can do the work of 30 humans. In the past, people used big dogs like St. Bernards. Today, rescuers prefer smaller, faster dogs. For Tally, saving people feels like a fun game of hide-and-seek. In Italy, dogs work as lifeguards. They are strong swimmers. They jump from boats and even helicopters to help people in the water. These dogs stay calm and help pull swimmers to safety. Italy is the only country where these dogs are official workers. At an airport in Michigan, a dog named Piper keeps planes safe. Birds can break airplane engines. Piper chases the birds away so the planes can take off safely. He wears special goggles to protect his eyes. Finally, at the Cincinnati Zoo, a dog named Blakeley is a nanny. He takes care of baby animals like cheetahs. He teaches them how to play and be gentle. These dogs show us that work can also be fun.
