In 2016, researchers measured how long people can pay attention. They used a computer program to track how long people stayed on one task before changing to another. On average, people stayed on one task for 40 seconds. Five years earlier, the average was 75 seconds. This does not mean attention is getting shorter. It means our attention is pulled in many directions today. Our brain helps us choose what to pay attention to, but it also watches for new things like a knock or a phone message. This helped humans survive long ago, so getting distracted is normal. You can improve focus. Hard tasks can hold attention. Taking breaks helps. Reducing stress, walking outside, and meditating also help. The easiest step is to remove distractions, like closing extra tabs or putting away your phone. Be kind to yourself. A quiet space gives your brain a better chance to focus.
