Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor with great power and money. But he followed a philosophy called Stoicism. It teaches that true freedom comes from controlling your mind, not from owning things. Marcus wrote his thoughts in a journal. Today it is called Meditations. In it, he looked at his expensive purple robe and said it was just sheep’s wool dyed with shellfish blood. He called fine wine just grape juice. He saw that objects only have the value we give them. We can do the same today. A costly watch is only glass and metal. A designer jacket is just dyed cloth. When we understand this, these things lose their power over us. Stoicism tells us to focus on what we can control: our thoughts and actions. If we do that, we stop being slaves to money. We can live like true kings, no matter how much we earn.
