The words 'neurotic' and 'psychotic' both describe mental pain. The difference is about how much a person knows about their own problems. A neurotic person knows they are not well. They can often say why. For example, they might say, 'I am anxious about my ex,' or 'I am sad because of my work.' The pain is there, but the cause is clear. A psychotic person also has pain, but they do not know the real reason. They are too afraid to look at their true suffering. Their mind makes up other stories to protect them. For example, they might think aliens are visiting them, but the real problem is feeling unloved by a parent. Everyone can have moments like this. We sometimes get angry at small things because we cannot face a bigger sadness. It is healthier to be more neurotic and less psychotic. That means trying to know the real reasons for our pain.
