For a long time, the word "Taiwan" was not on Taiwan's passport. It only said "Republic of China." This happened because of a war in 1949. The winners stayed in mainland China. They became the People's Republic of China (PRC). The losers moved to the island of Taiwan. They kept the name Republic of China (ROC). Both groups said they were the real China. At first, the world supported Taiwan. But in the 1970s, the United States and the United Nations chose to support the PRC instead. Over time, Taiwan changed. It became a free democracy. The people there started to feel more "Taiwanese." In 2003, they finally added "Taiwan" to their passports. Today, mainland China wants Taiwan to be part of its country. However, most people in Taiwan just want peace. They do not want war, and they want to keep their own government.
