Google DeepMind’s boss on AI, power, God and what’s next | The Economist (Level 1)

Demis Hassabis is a famous scientist. He wants to build a very smart computer program. This is called Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI. He believes AGI is a great tool for science. It can help us understand the universe. It can also help fix big problems in medicine and the environment. Some people worry that AI is dangerous. Hassabis knows there are risks. However, he is hopeful. He thinks smart people can build AI safely. He does not like it when people say AI is like a god. He says it is just a tool, like a telescope. Today, many companies are racing to build the best AI. Hassabis wishes they would work together instead. His biggest dream is not winning awards. His main goal is to build AGI safely so it can help everyone in the world.
