Australia is building stronger ties with its Pacific island neighbors. For years, China has been increasing its influence in the region. Australia worries that China might set up a military base there. So Australia has signed many new agreements. In 2023, Australia and Tuvalu made a deal about climate change and security. In 2024, Australia and Nauru agreed that Nauru would not make security deals with other countries without Australia's approval. In 2025, Australia and Papua New Guinea signed a defense alliance, which means they will help each other if attacked. Australia has also made agreements with Vanuatu and Fiji. These deals often include money for development, education, and health. However, Pacific island leaders say they do not want to choose between Australia and China. They want to keep trading with China, their biggest economic partner. Australia says it is part of the Pacific family, not an outside power. This growing competition between Australia and China may continue.
