A British writer studied democracy for ten years. He spoke in America about how citizens are building a better future. He says democracy is not something we have. It is something we must build. In Melbourne, Australia, many people faced COVID and big fires. Some citizens met online. They wanted to solve problems because the old system could not. They formed a group called Regen Melbourne. They set three goals: make a river safe for swimming, bring fresh food to all neighborhoods, and build community on every street. Five years later, the city council accepted one goal, and people are swimming in the river. In Altadena, California, a fire destroyed many homes. Neighbors helped each other. They created Dena Heals, a place that helped over 7,000 people. The writer says this is democracy. People coming together to build what they need. We should start building now.
