How Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown is making America weaker | The Economist (Level 1)

President Trump's immigration policy has changed. The southern border is much quieter now, but deportation efforts have moved into the middle of the country. Many people being arrested and deported have lived in the United States for a long time and do not have criminal records. In one month, July, about 50,000 people were arrested for deportation. Some were sent to countries like Liberia and South Sudan. The government has also made it harder for people to come to the U.S. legally. For example, student visas dropped by 29% last year. Because fewer immigrants are entering, the U.S. labor force has shrunk by about one million people since January. Many people worry that these changes will hurt the economy and make it harder for the country to attract talented workers in the future.
