How exactly do inhalers work? - Anna Rothschild (Level 1)

Long ago, a famous writer named Marcel Proust had a hard time breathing. He had a lung condition called asthma. To feel better, he smoked special cigarettes. This was a bad idea because smoke hurts the lungs. Today, we have a much better tool called an inhaler. Inhalers are small devices that put medicine straight into the lungs without smoke. They treat two main problems: asthma and COPD. There are two types of inhalers. "Rescue inhalers" help quickly during an emergency. They relax the muscles in the lungs to let air in. "Preventative inhalers" are used every day to stop problems before they start. These medicines help people breathe easily. Thanks to inhalers, people do not need to stay in bed or smoke dangerous medicine anymore.
