How immigration policies shaped America and evolved throughout its history (Level 1)

America has a long history of immigration. Millions of people entered through Ellis Island in New York Harbor. In the past, there were no visas or passports, and only 2 percent of people were turned away. The Statue of Liberty became a symbol of hope for them. But each time many immigrants arrived, some Americans were afraid and angry. Laws then limited immigration, such as the 1924 Johnson-Reed Act and the 1965 Hart-Celler Act. Today, about 50 million immigrants live in the United States. President Trump has promised stronger enforcement, but this is not new in American history. Some people worry about immigration, while others say the country will need more workers as the population gets older. Whether America will welcome immigrants remains an open question.
