English changes over time. American and British English sound different. For example, the word 'butter' is not the same. British speakers often say 'butta,' dropping the 'r' sound. Americans say 'butter,' but the 't' sounds softer. This happened because languages naturally change in unstressed parts of words. Differences can show where people are from or their social group. Some words are also disappearing. The word 'shall' is used less and less. 'Must' is being replaced by 'have to' or 'need to.' Young people often use 'on accident' instead of 'by accident.' Language always changes, and young speakers bring new ways of speaking.
