How to attack (and defend) a medieval castle - Connor C. Wilson (Level 1)

In 1315, a Scottish king tried to attack an English castle. He failed after only 11 days because the castle was very strong. This shows how well medieval castles worked. Castles were not just for hiding. Kings and lords used them to show their power, control people, and attack enemies. The first European castles were built of wood on high hills. Later, people built them with stone to make them stronger. Some castles were very beautiful and had many colors. Over time, enemies made new weapons to break castle walls. They used big rocks and fire. To stay safe, builders made castles with many rings of high walls. But later, new weapons called cannons were invented. Cannons easily broke the high walls. Building stronger castles cost too much money. Because of this, lords stopped building them. Today, many old castles are famous places for tourists to visit.
