How to explain something complicated (Level 1)

Harvard psychologist Dan Gilbert gave a TED talk. He wanted to explain a difficult idea: synthesized happiness. People can create their own happiness even when bad things happen. Gilbert did not explain everything at once. He went step by step. First, he made people curious. He talked about a brain part called the prefrontal cortex. It works like a flight simulator. People can imagine experiences before they happen. But this simulator is not perfect. People think winning the lottery will make them much happier. They also think losing the use of their legs will make them much less happy. But one year later, lottery winners and people who cannot use their legs are equally happy. Why? Because the brain has a psychological immune system. It helps people feel better about their lives. Gilbert used examples and small steps. His talk shows that a hard idea can be explained if it is built piece by piece.
