Many people wait until the last minute to do their work. This is called procrastination. Tim Urban explains how our brains work. He says we have two parts in our mind. The first part is the Rational Decision-Maker. This part wants to make plans and work hard. The second part is the Instant Gratification Monkey. The Monkey only wants to have fun and do easy things. The Monkey often stops us from working. We watch videos or play games instead. Then, the Panic Monster arrives. This happens when a deadline is close. The Monkey is scared of the monster and runs away. Then we finally do our work. However, some things in life do not have deadlines. Examples include staying healthy or spending time with family. The Panic Monster does not wake up for these things. This can make us sad for a long time. We must be careful. We need to control the Monkey and not waste our life.
