People worry about AI for many reasons, but a scientist has another fear. He thinks AI can make us boring. When we let AI choose for us, we stop exploring. We only choose safe things we already know. Think of an ice cream shop with many flavors. We often choose a favorite. But sometimes we try a new flavor. This balance between safe and new is important. It helps us grow. But AI systems often recommend only the most popular choices. In one test, a scientist asked ChatGPT to recommend an ice cream flavor 100 times. It chose the same two popular flavors 96 times. When he told AI his favorite flavor, the AI chose that flavor every time. AI can make our choices narrow. But we can change this. We can ask AI to help us find new things. Companies could add a dial to choose how safe or new we want. That way, we can stay curious and interesting.
