Is global culture dead? | The Economist (Level 1)

Many people think the internet makes everyone like the same things. But this is not true. Today, people use apps like Spotify and Netflix. These apps show that people love local music and shows. For example, in Brazil, 96 of the top 100 songs are by Brazilian singers. People want to hear their own language. They want stories about their own lives. In the past, TV stations tried to make shows for the whole world. Now, companies like Netflix make shows for specific countries. If a show is very popular in its home country, it might become popular everywhere. Technology makes it cheap to create videos. On YouTube, most viral videos are only popular in one country. In the past, radio DJs chose the music we heard. Now, streaming lets us choose. We can see that people really prefer their own local culture.
