Many people know about Stockholm Syndrome. This is when hostages start to like the people who captured them. However, there is an opposite condition called Lima Syndrome. This happens when the captors feel sorry for their hostages and want to protect them. The name comes from a real event in Lima, Peru, in 1996. During a big party, a group of fighters took hundreds of people as prisoners. Surprisingly, the fighters let many people go early. They started to care about the prisoners and treated them like friends. Why does this happen? First, it is hard for humans to ignore the pain of others. We naturally have empathy. Second, spending time together makes it hard to hate someone. When people share stories and look at each other, they connect. This shows that kindness can appear even in very bad situations.
