Nikole Hannah-Jones reflects on her daughter's school experience (Level 1)

Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote a personal essay about a difficult choice. She sent her daughter to a school in Brooklyn with many poor students and low performance. There were warning signs. The lunchroom was messy, some teachers were absent, and emails went unanswered. In fourth grade, she found that much of her daughter's math work was wrong and not even graded. Many families left the school. But Nikole stayed. She believed that families with choices should help all children, not just their own. Her husband was active in the school. They had many emotional talks. Later, her daughter said that this choice hurt her. Nikole says it was hard, but she still believes she did the right thing. She says other children were just as deserving.
