In 1883, a woman named Josephine Cochrane needed money. She also wanted a safe way to wash her nice dishes. So, she built the first dishwasher. Today, dishwashers work in a similar way. First, the machine fills with hot water. Arms spin and spray the water on the dishes. A sensor checks how dirty the water is. Then, the machine adds soap. The soap grabs the food and pulls it off the plates. Finally, very hot water washes everything again to kill germs. To get the best results, do not wash your dishes before putting them in the machine. Just scrape the food into the trash. The soap needs some food to work well. Also, dishwashers save water compared to washing by hand. However, you should still wash wooden spoons, plastic cups, and sharp knives by hand. The hot water can break them.
