Some people see the world through one big idea. They are like hedgehogs. A hedgehog curls into a ball for safety. These thinkers are very sure about their ideas. Other people are like foxes. A fox uses many ways to hunt and stay safe. These thinkers have many ideas and are not so sure. They know that life is not simple. The Greek poet Archilochus said, "The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing." Later, a philosopher named Isaiah Berlin used this idea to describe different thinkers. More recently, a researcher studied experts. He found that the most confident experts were often wrong. The foxes, who were more careful, were more often right. In today's world, we hear many strong opinions. But being confident does not mean being correct. It is good to listen to ideas, but we must remember that simple answers are not always the best ones. The world is complex, and careful thinking often gets us closer to the truth.
