Have you ever waited in a long line to board a plane and wished there was a faster way? Mathematicians have studied this problem. There are two main reasons boarding is slow. First, if you have a window seat, people sitting in the middle or aisle can block you. Second, people in the front of the plane stop to put away their bags, which holds up people behind them. Some airlines try boarding the back seats first, but it doesn’t help much. A better method is to board window seats first, then middle seats, then aisle seats. This can cut boarding time to about 16 minutes. The fastest method, called the Steffen method, can board a plane in just 15 minutes. But it needs everyone to line up in a perfect order, which is hard. Even so, the best boarding only saves about 10 minutes. So next time, be patient and enjoy the ride.
