Jo the First is a cruel ruler. He controls his country with fear. Everyone listens to him because they are afraid. His son, JoJo, grows up in the castle. JoJo never sees his father hurt anyone. He only sees people praising his father. JoJo thinks his father is a hero. When JoJo grows up, he becomes a ruler too. He acts just like his father. He treats people badly. Is this JoJo's fault? Some thinkers say yes. They believe JoJo chooses to be bad. However, a philosopher named Susan Wolf disagrees. She says JoJo is not fully responsible. JoJo never learned the difference between right and wrong. His childhood taught him that cruelty was normal. If he cannot understand what is good, maybe we cannot blame him. This story asks a hard question. Are we responsible for our actions if we were taught the wrong things?
