The United States and Brazil both faced similar attacks on their governments. In both countries, a president lost an election but refused to accept the result. Angry crowds stormed the capital cities to support these leaders. However, the results for the leaders were very different. In Brazil, the government acted very quickly. Brazil has a history of military rule, so their laws are strong against leaders who abuse power. A powerful judge named Alexandre de Moraes led an investigation. The police found proof that former President Bolsonaro planned to stay in power illegally. Because of this, the court banned him from running for office and sentenced him to prison. In the US, the outcome was different for Donald Trump. Politicians in his party protected him, so he was not removed from office. The US Supreme Court also ruled that presidents have special protection from the law. This story shows that rules alone cannot save a democracy; people must be willing to use them.
