US-Canada Trade War: Is This Trump’s Bid to Take Over Canada? (Level 1)

Canada and the United States are in a serious trade fight. On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada was at war with the United States over trade. Trade talks between the two countries broke down last weekend. President Donald Trump put new 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods like hockey sticks, cement, and furniture. Mr. Carney said Canada would match those tariffs dollar for dollar. He said, 'You are at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.' Mr. Trump said Canada wants the benefits of being a US state without being one. Canada is worried about its sovereignty. Some American negotiators wanted changes to French language rules in Quebec. Many Canadians support Mr. Carney. A poll says 76 percent of Canadians agree with his decision to walk away. The new tariffs could hurt both countries and may cost Canadian jobs.
