Upstairs, downstairs: The life of a British maid - Stephanie Honchell Smith (Level 1)

In 1906, Alice Sutton is a young servant in England. She works at a big house called Wroxton Abbey. Alice is only 16 years old. Her job is very hard. She cleans floors and helps the wealthy owners, Sir John and Lady Ann. Many women work as servants during this time, but they want more rights. Alice and her friend Louisa want to vote. They belong to a group that fights for women's rights. One night, the King’s brother visits the house for a special dinner. Alice and Louisa see a chance to make a statement. They sneak out to a nearby church. Alice writes "Votes For Women" on the wall with chalk. Her roommate, Roberta, even breaks a window with a rock. They hope the important guests will see their message. Years later, life changed. After World War I, women started working in offices and factories. Finally, women won the right to vote.
