What This Abandoned Military Base Reveals About Trump's Greenland Ambitions | WSJ (Level 1)

Greenland is a very big island. Recently, the United States president said he wanted to buy it. He wants it to keep America safe and to find valuable metals in the ground. In the past, the US had many military bases in Greenland. They used these bases to watch for danger. Today, only one US base is still open. Traveling in Greenland is very hard. It is freezing cold, and there is ice everywhere. To reach an old, empty military base, people must use planes, small boats, and dog sleds. When the US left these old bases many years ago, they left behind a lot of trash and pollution. Denmark had to clean it up. Because the weather is harsh and travel is difficult, building new bases would cost a lot of money. The US can already use land there, so many people wonder why they want to buy the whole island.
