Everyone needs time alone, but being forced to be alone is dangerous. This is called solitary confinement. It is common in prisons in the United States. Prisoners stay in small, windowless rooms for up to 24 hours a day. They have no one to talk to and nothing to do. This isolation hurts the brain and body. Humans need other people to stay healthy. Without friends or family, prisoners lose touch with reality. They often feel sad, scared, and angry. The part of the brain that controls fear gets too active, while the part that helps us think clearly gets smaller. This can lead to memory loss and hallucinations. Experts say this treatment is like torture. It does not help prisoners become better people. In fact, it makes it harder for them to live normal lives later. Other countries, like Norway, do not use isolation as much. They focus on teaching and helping prisoners. This works better because people need people to heal.
