Our bodies produce fluids to stay healthy. One important fluid is vaginal discharge. It is normal and helps clean the vagina to protect it from infection. Discharge changes as a person grows. It usually starts during puberty because of hormones. It is made of water, old cells, and bacteria. This mix keeps the vagina acidic, which helps kill bad germs. The amount and color of discharge change during the month. Before an egg is released, the fluid is often thin and clear. Later in the month, it becomes thicker and cloudy. This is part of the normal body cycle. Other things can change discharge too, like being pregnant or taking medicine. As women get older, they usually produce less fluid. Most changes are okay. However, if the fluid smells bad, causes itching, or looks gray or clumpy, it might be an infection. If you notice pain or strange changes, you should see a doctor. Usually, though, discharge just means the body is working well.
