What’s life like as a woman under the Taliban? | The Economist (Level 1)

Life is very difficult for women and girls in Afghanistan right now. The Taliban make strict rules. On the streets, most women cover their faces. Many cannot work, and universities have removed women. Girls are not allowed to attend public secondary schools. Only a small number of girls, perhaps one in ten, receive formal secondary education, and some go to private religious schools. The Taliban leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, supports these strict rules. Some Taliban members disagree, but they cannot stop him. A new law makes it easier for girls to be married without their clear consent because silence is treated as agreement. Some girls wanted to become lawyers or doctors, but their dreams have been crushed. Many young women say they have no hope for the future.
