Trees are the heaviest and largest living things on Earth. Some trees weigh as much as ten blue whales. You might think trees grow from the ground, but they actually grow by "eating" air. They take carbon from the air to build their bodies. A tree has thousands of leaves. These leaves act like tiny factories. They use sunlight to turn air and water into sugar. This process gives the tree energy to grow. The leaves also have tiny mouths that release water, which helps cool the air around them. Under the ground, trees have a large network of roots. Roots hold the tree in place and drink water from the soil. Roots also have a special partner called fungi. Fungi are tiny living things that find food in the soil for the tree. In return, the tree gives the fungi sugar. This team helps the tree become a giant.
