Why China is Falling Out with its Trading Partners (Level 1)

Last week, China announced a huge trade surplus of over $1 trillion. This means the country sold much more to other nations than it bought from them. This situation is causing problems for China's trading partners. Countries like the United States, Mexico, and members of the European Union are worried. They have started to add extra taxes, called tariffs, on Chinese products to protect their own businesses. Normally, when a country sells a lot, it should also buy things from others. However, China is now making almost everything itself, from cheap parts to expensive electric cars. The government also wants to rely less on foreign goods. This makes it hard for other countries to sell to China. To fix this, China may need to encourage its own people to spend more money. If Chinese people buy more goods, the trade balance might improve and help reduce tensions with other countries.
