Many people think depression is a chemical imbalance. They believe people with depression do not have enough serotonin. Medicines called SSRIs increase serotonin, but they take weeks to work. Scientists still do not fully know how they work. A different medicine called ketamine may help. Ketamine does not increase serotonin. It works on a different brain chemical called glutamate. It blocks fast communication in the brain. This seems to help the brain strengthen connections. This change may reduce depression quickly, sometimes within hours. Ketamine is not for everyone. It has risks. But it gives new hope. It shows that depression is not about being broken. The brain can adapt and change.
