Why Ethiopia is About to Invade Eritrea (Level 1)

Ethiopia is moving closer to a possible war with its neighbor Eritrea. Recently, seven regional militias led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) declared war on Ethiopia's federal government. But after only two weeks of fighting, government forces pushed the TPLF back toward the border with Eritrea. Ethiopia then cut diplomatic relations with Eritrea, saying Eritrea supported the rebels. Ethiopia is a landlocked country and wants to use Eritrea's port of Assab on the Red Sea. Eritrea separated from Ethiopia in 1993. The two countries have had conflicts before. Now some reports say Eritrean troops have entered northern Ethiopia. If Ethiopian forces chase the TPLF to the border, the conflict could spill into Eritrea. Many experts think Ethiopia would win a war because its economy is much bigger, but it would still cause great suffering.
