Japan has the oldest royal family in the world. It has lasted for over 2,600 years. Today, the Emperor is a symbol of the country. However, the family faces a big problem. There are not enough men left to become the next Emperor. Japanese law says that only men can rule. Women are not allowed to be on the throne. The current Emperor, Naruhito, has a daughter named Princess Aiko. Because she is a woman, she cannot become the Empress. If she marries a normal citizen, she must leave the royal family. Currently, there is only one young boy in the family, Prince Hisahito. He is the Emperor's nephew. If he does not have a son in the future, the royal family line will end. Most Japanese people want to change the law to let women rule. However, the government prefers to keep the old traditions. They want to adopt men from old royal branches instead.
