Why Violence has Erupted in Mexico (Level 1)

Mexican security forces have killed a dangerous criminal known as El Mencho. He was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). This group is one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico. The United States government wanted him caught and offered a $15 million reward for help. The operation happened in the state of Jalisco. It was successful, but it caused many problems immediately after. Angry members of the cartel burned cars and attacked cities in at least six different states. This violence is a reaction to the death of their leader. Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, is trying a new plan to stop crime. She is working more closely with the police and the US government. This is a big change from the past. However, some experts are worried. When a powerful leader dies, different groups often fight to take his place. Mexico must be careful because it will help host the World Cup soccer tournament soon. The government needs to keep the country safe for the games.
