Austria-Hungary had a very difficult time during World War I. Their military performed poorly because of three main problems. First, the government was very confusing. The empire was split into two parts: Austria and Hungary. This meant they had three different armies instead of one unified force. It was hard to get everyone to work together. Second, communication was a major issue. The soldiers came from many different places and spoke over ten different languages. Some spoke German, while others spoke Hungarian, Polish, or Czech. Often, the soldiers could not understand their officers. This made fighting battles very difficult. Finally, the military leaders made bad choices. The top general, Conrad von Hötzendorf, was aggressive and stubborn. He ordered attacks without thinking about the weather or the land. Because of this, thousands of soldiers died very early in the war. By the end of the first year, Austria-Hungary had lost its best men and needed Germany's help to survive.
