In August 1945, World War II was ending. Japan was losing the war, but the government did not know what to do. The United States and its allies asked Japan to stop fighting immediately. This was called "unconditional surrender." Many Japanese leaders were afraid. They wanted to make sure their Emperor stayed in power. Because they waited too long to answer, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Also, the Soviet Union attacked Japan. Finally, Emperor Hirohito decided to surrender to save his people. However, some army officers were very angry. They tried to start a coup, which is a takeover of the government. They attacked the palace to stop the Emperor from announcing the surrender. Their plan failed because the army leaders did not help them. On August 15, the Emperor spoke on the radio, and the war finally ended.
