During the Napoleonic Wars, many countries in Europe were fighting. However, the Ottoman Empire mostly stayed out of the war. This seems strange because their enemies, Russia and Austria, were weak at that time. There were a few reasons for this. First, the Ottoman army was not strong. Their special soldiers, called Janissaries, refused to use modern weapons. They even killed leaders who tried to change the army. Second, the Ottomans did not trust France. Napoleon had attacked Ottoman land in Egypt earlier, which hurt their friendship. Finally, the timing was bad. The Ottomans fought a war against Russia, but they signed a peace treaty in 1812. One month later, Napoleon attacked Russia. The Ottomans were too tired and weak to fight anymore. Therefore, they decided to stay neutral and did not gain any new land.
