In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. This made Americans very angry. Most people wanted to fight Japan immediately to get revenge. However, the United States government made a different plan. They decided to focus on defeating Germany first. This plan was called the "Europe First" strategy. There were two main reasons for this decision. First, Germany and Italy declared war on the US soon after Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D. Roosevelt believed that Germany was the biggest danger. He thought Germany might take over all of Europe and then attack America later. Second, Great Britain and the Soviet Union needed help. The British leader, Winston Churchill, said that if the US did not help them, Germany would win the war in Europe. Even though the plan was to focus on Europe, the US did not ignore Japan. The US Navy still fought hard in the Pacific Ocean. They wanted to stop Japan from taking more land. In the end, the United States had enough money, soldiers, and ships to fight in both places at the same time. They helped their allies in Europe while also winning battles against Japan.
