Why is Japan Suddenly Allying with its Neighbours? (Level 1)

Japan is making new friends in Asia. Recently, Japan and the Philippines agreed to work together closely. They want to share information and help each other's military. Japan is also signing agreements with other countries like Vietnam and Indonesia. Why is Japan doing this? In the past, Japan relied on the United States for protection. But now, Japan wants to take more responsibility. A former leader named Shinzo Abe created an idea called a 'Free and Open Indo-Pacific.' This means the oceans in Asia should be safe for everyone to use for trade. China wants to control a lot of these waters. Japan is worried about this. So, Japan is giving money and military equipment to its neighbors. By working together, Japan hopes to keep the region safe and peaceful, even if the United States is busy with other problems.
