Will it take a disaster to force AI regulation? | The Economist (Level 1)

Artificial intelligence is becoming more powerful. Many people worry about its dangers. Some experts think governments will only act after a very serious accident, sometimes called a 'Chernobyl of AI'. Experts do not want to stop all AI work. They want more safety rules. The United States and China are both building advanced AI. If America slows down, China might catch up quickly. Some rules already exist. A few companies must ask the government before sharing their most advanced AI models. Some US states have passed laws. But experts say more should be done. They hope leaders will focus on safety before something bad happens. It is a difficult race, but people can still choose a safer path.
